In Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the project is rooted in a philosophy the brand calls "The Formless Greatness, A Quiet Way of Seeing" — the conceptual foundation for the entire project. Rooted in Taoist thought, it is based on a simple belief: true greatness shows itself through experience, not just looks. The phrase "A Quiet Way of Seeing" comes from Mencius and encourages us to look past first impressions to discover something deeper.

As brands grow and earn trust, a new challenge emerges: designing a hospitality experience that feels complete. This is the inspiration behind Grand Ji Hotel. For the brand, Grand is not about size, but about welcoming a wider vision, offering guests a deeper, more meaningful stay, and approaching hospitality with greater care. These values shape both the design and the soul of the hotel.
Ji Hotel is known for its Eastern spirit, moderation, humanity, and connection to nature. These qualities have made it a reputable choice for travellers. As the brand has grown, many loyal guests have started looking for something more—not more luxury, but a more refined experience. They want better spaces, thoughtful amenities, and a deeper sense of comfort, all from a brand they already trust.
The hotel represents the natural progression of Ji Hotel. It builds on its original character, improving the quality of spaces, functionality, and the overall guest experience while keeping the familiar feeling of calm and restraint that defines the brand.

The studio focused on how spaces work in real life, not just how they look. Design, operations, and guest experience come together as a single system, with every choice made to serve the people who use the hotel.

For Vermilion Zhou Design Group, Eastern design was never the starting point. It is a spatial expression that emerges instinctively from an understanding of how people live. Instead of recreating traditional imagery, Grand Ji Hotel translates the ideas of water, clouds, mountains, tea, and pine into a contemporary spatial language. Through materials, light, art, and objects, these elements move naturally into daily life, becoming lived experiences rather than mere decoration.
From the entrance and lobby to the breakfast area, guest rooms, and shared spaces, every design choice is based on real guest experience. Life shapes the space, and experience leads the design. In the end, the Eastern spirit is not shown on purpose; guests simply feel it each time they visit.

Grand Ji Hotel is not about adding more luxury to Ji Hotel. It is about offering a more complete experience. The project addresses both changes in hotel design and what today’s travellers want. When design centres on experience and space blends seamlessly through daily life, the brand does not need to shout for attention. Like the peaceful rhythm of the seasons, everything settles naturally into its place.
