Modular Homes: The Smart Way to Build Off the Grid

Along the steep, remote banks of Portugal's Paiva River, eleven small cabins now rest among granite rocks and old stone terraces. There was no need for a construction yard or a constant flow of trucks. The houses arrived mostly finished, placed one after another, and quietly blended into the landscape.

This project arrives as slow travel, remote work, and a wish for real contact with nature are all on the rise. Prefabrication, once considered a compromise, has become a top choice for architects working in remote areas. Paradinha shows why this shift is important—not just for saving money and labour, but also for protecting the land.
The project began with simple plans: a few tourist rooms on a rugged plot bought by a private investor who loved the wild riverside setting. But the land features rough, steep, and hard-to-reach terrain, making traditional construction slow and expensive even before work began. So in the end, the land shaped what was possible.
The answer was to build almost everything off-site. With the Gomos modular system, each cabin was made from prefabricated units. All the technical services—water, electricity, and climate control—were grouped into one module and connected to the rest. This method, used for all eleven cabins, made assembling on the tough site much easier.

The modules were combined and stacked in multiple configurations to create multiple cabin layouts. What was once a practical solution became a technical experiment that today demonstrates how flexible the modular system can be without sacrificing efficiency or quality.
Rather than building a row of identical guest rooms, the studio set its sights higher: small houses that could serve two purposes. Some are holiday retreats, while others are full-time homes. Mixing tourism and permanent housing was a deliberate choice, and it changes the place's atmosphere.
Experience shows that seasonal places can become quiet and empty once the warmer months are over. Over time, empty buildings can also start to fall into disrepair. By bringing in people who live there year-round, Paradinha stays active and welcoming year-round—not just during the summer. That means buildings are better cared for, the area feels safer, and the community feels like a real place to live, not just a seasonal destination.

There are eleven cabins in total, in four different sizes ranging from 28 to 58 square meters. They are spread across the site in a way that looks random but is actually carefully planned. Each house is placed to protect its neighbours' privacy and views, so no balcony faces another. Behind the wooden slats, you see the trees, and from some cabins, you can look all the way to the river.
Inside, each cabin is designed for minimal living, with one compact space that includes a living area, sleeping area, areahen, and bathroom. Concrete is used throughout, mostly left unfinished inside and out. This choice was made for both style and cost, giving the interiors a cool, industrial feel rather than a softer, more decorated look.

The raw concrete is balanced by oak floors, which add warmth to the space. On the balconies, vertical wood slats let in light, offer privacy from neighbours, and frame views of the forest and sometimes the river, almost like changing photographs.
The site's history was considered just as much as its future. The old stone walls that once supported the terraces were rebuilt using local stone. Today, they help support the houses and shape the new paths through the site. Mature trees were also preserved whenever possible, with cabins designed around them rather than being cut down.

In the end, Paradinha shows that industrial construction and thoughtful, site-specific design can work well together. The modular system helped solve practical and logistical challenges while still respecting the landscape. The old walls, trees, and natural slopes were preserved rather than removed. The result is a retreat that truly belongs in the Paiva Valley—a place that welcomes both visitors and year-round residents, without feeling forced or out of place.
