Right next to the University of Guelph campus and the peaceful Guelph Arboretum, a new research building has opened. It may not catch your eye at first, but you might hear the soft buzz of thousands of tiny wings. This is the Honey Bee Research Centre (HBRC), a 14,000-square-foot space dedicated to studying bees and helping people learn about the world of bees.

This centre comes at a crucial time: pollinators are struggling with habitat loss, disease, and climate change. To make matters worse, the future of honey bees is tied to the human food supply. This new centre is both a scientific hub and a reminder that even the smallest creatures matter in the bigger picture.

Most research buildings keep their work behind closed doors, but this one is different. The HBRC was created as a living lab, with spaces meant to spark curiosity about beekeeping, science, and food production. Visitors are encouraged to come in, explore, and learn.


 The layout reflects this idea. Guests can easily move between the apiary, the lab, and the production rooms, watching honey being extracted and processed for sale. This experience will be live without entering the restricted work areas. Science is open for everyone to see, with curiosity and work going hand in hand.


This careful planning was a team effort. Researchers, staff, and commercial beekeepers were involved early in the design process, drawing on their everyday experience to help decide where equipment should go and how the centre would operate.

Before the research centre was built, this land was used as a tree nursery. The design team worked to preserve mature trees and limit digging, showing respect for nature and helping people feel proud of how the centre cares for its surroundings.


You can see this respect for nature in the building’s exterior. Folded metal panels cover the outside in patterns that echo the tall lines of nearby trees, helping the building blend into the forest. On the north side, a living wall of climbing vines will thicken over time and become part of the landscape. Plants that attract pollinators line the entrance and walkway, turning even the path to the building into a small habitat.


The Arboretum also shaped what grows around the centre. The team chose plants for the outdoor spaces with the nearby urban forest in mind, creating a landscape that supports local wildlife, not just the bees living there.

The Discovery Centre is the building's main public area. It’s a flexible space for exhibitions, workshops, talks, and events for all ages. Because it connects directly to the demonstration apiary, learning goes beyond diagrams and displays. Visitors can step outside to see live bees and watch the systems they just learned about in action.


In this project, accessibility was a priority from the start. From the moment people arrive, the building makes it clear that it’s meant to be explored.

People often don’t notice bees until they disappear. The Honey Bee Research Centre helps change that by making the hidden work behind our food supply visible and easy to understand. By openly showcasing pollination, hive health, and honey production, the building invites everyone—whether from the city or the countryside—alike to see their part in this important story.

In the end, the building’s greatest strength may be its humility. It was built for clients as light as a raindrop, and by focusing on their needs, it connected with everyone.
