McMaster Greenhouse: Where Nature & Innovation Unite

The Life Sciences Building and Greenhouse at McMaster University introduce a fresh approach to studying life sciences and natural systems. The new 11,400-square-foot greenhouse is now connected to the main building, replacing the previous off-site facility. This space brings together research, teaching, and student life, creating a bright, welcoming entrance.

The extension is not merely a greenhouse; it provides a display of both science and nature. The sawtooth roof and glass front face University Avenue, making greenery and research a visible part of campus life. The greenhouse is positioned to receive maximum sunlight, wrapping around the west and south sides of the building. Furthermore, as night falls and these glass walls glow, this building becomes the new campus landmark.
Visitors enter through a wood-framed entrance and cross a bridge above the two-storey greenhouse, connecting immediately with the research inside. The path leads to a bright lobby built with mass timber, now the new centre of the Life Sciences Building. This open and welcoming space is ideal for gathering, studying, meetings, and events.

The greenhouse has both open and secure research areas, allowing visitors to experience and observe science in action. It includes wet rainforest and dry savannah zones with more than 200 plant species. Special research rooms and support spaces provide controlled environments for studies on plant genomics, microbes, soil health, and other natural systems. Gallows walls let people watch the research in real time.
The use of natural materials helps spread the greenhouse atmosphere throughout the building, and the inclusion of mass timber, wooden accents, abundant daylight, plants, and views of the greenhouse makes the space feel warm and healthy. The project has received LEED Gold certification and aligns with McMaster's sustainability objectives.
This multi-year renovation of the five-storey Life Sciences Building includes the creation of new areas for gathering and collaboration, enhanced accessibility, increased natural light, and McMaster's first geothermal heating and cooling system. The renovated building and greenhouse now offer an immersive environment where science, architecture, and nature converge to inspire discovery.
